Links - Faith-based and Community Organizations

I receive a number of queries from private Christian schools and other religious-based organizations who are interested in seeking grant funding to help support their programs. Below are some links that may be helpful in providing additional information about how you can access federal-funding if you are a faith-based or community-based organization.

Guidance for Faith-Based and Community-Based Organizations on Partnering with the Federal Government

President Bush’s Faith-Based and Community Initiative has made it possible for faith-based charities to compete on equal footing for public dollars to provide public services. There are not separate programs set aside solely for faith- and community-based organizations; however, this initiative has made it possible for these groups to compete with other public charities for funding for many federally supported programs.

This 16-page document provides a brief overview of the following:
  • An overview of the federal grants process
  • Do’s and don’ts for faith-based organizations
  • Facts about charitable choice

This document may help answer some questions that faith-based organizations have about finding grant opportunities and what responsibilities and requirements exist for applying for and managing federally funded programs.

Also available is a 76-page document entitled Federal Funds Available for Organizations that Help Those in Need. This publication provides some basic information about the Federal grants process. It also lists more than 100 programs that may interest your organization. Grants programs are organized into general categories ranging from programs for elders and the homeless to those that serve at-risk youth and people making the transition from welfare to work.
